The ‘Cosby Show’ actor declared, ‘Of course Bill Cosby is guilty!
The growing chorus against scandal-plagued comedian Bill Cosby has grown by one.
Former “The Cosby Show” actor Joseph C. Phillips, who plays Lt. Martin Kendall, husband of Denise Huxtable on the NBC sitcom, pointed the finger at his former TV father-in-law in a column on his website titled “Of course.” Bill Cosby is guilty!”
In the lengthy blog post, Phillips recalled that, during his “Cosby Show” tenure, “my attitude was that if Bill cheated on [his wife] Camille, I was pretty sure Camille knew. Hey, if everyone who claims to know actually knows, then Camille certainly knows, and she would have accepted it long ago.”
He added: “I have never seen Bill engage in any inappropriate behavior. I certainly never saw him drug anyone. So all I have is gossip like everyone else.”
Phillips noted that his attitude changed when the accusations began dominating the headlines and he ran into an “old friend” for whom Cosby had been a “mentor”:
The question appeared in my mind.
“Hey, do you mind if I ask you something?”
She looked at me and asked, “Did it make you cry?”
I was a bit taken aback. “Oh,” I staggered. “I hope it doesn’t make you cry.”
She laughed. “Go ahead and ask your questions.”
“Once upon a time,” I began. “I remember that you knew Bill — that he was like your mentor or something. Did he ever…”
Before I could finish my sentence, she started crying.
We spent the next two hours sitting on the bench talking. In tears, she told me her story. She cursed him for violating both her trust and her body. She cursed herself for not being smarter and for lowering herself in pursuit of success. I listened patiently. When she started to get exhausted, she turned to me. “Do you trust me?”
“Correct.” I said. “I trust you.”
“Why?” she asked.
“Because I don’t believe you’re crazy and only a crazy person would sit with me all this time and share a fantasy.”
I’m not sure whether our conversation was uplifting for her or not. I know it’s heartbreaking for me.
In recent months, dozens of women have come forward to accuse Cosby of rape or sexual assault, many of them claiming the comedian had previously drugged them.
These allegations have sparked multiple lawsuits, including a complaint by former “America’s Next Top Model” judge Janice Dickinson.
Cosby’s attorney, Martin Singer, has denied past allegations against the comedian.
Earlier this month, elements of testimony stemming from a 2005 lawsuit were released, revealing that Cosby admitted to taking Quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with.
