It’s official: The Office will be returning on the streaming platform Peacock. However, while set in the same world as the previous series set at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company’s Scranton branch, the sequel series will follow an all-new cast of characters in a different profession.
Per NBCUniversal, the untitled series will be a new show that’s set in the same universe as The Office. Officially ordered to series at Peacock, the new show comes from Greg Daniels, the creator of the American version of The Office, alongside Nathan for You co-creator Michael Koman. Confirmed cast members include Domhnall Gleeson (About Time, Ex-Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus), and production will begin in July 2024.
In the new series, per the logline, “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” NBCUniversal Entertainment President Lisa Katz said of the series in a statement. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
Daniels and Koman are executive producing alongside Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the creators of the original UK version of The Office. Also exec producing are Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas. Universal Television is producing the series.
Will the Sequel Series See the Same Success?
The American adaptation was a huge success, spanning more than 200 episodes across nine seasons between 2005 and 2013. The mockumentary series followed the employees of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, originally led by Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. Among the show’s many accolades are four Primetime Emmy Award wins. It continues to be popular with its availability on streaming, even more than a decade since the series ended its original run on broadcast television.
It’s not yet clear when the untitled sequel series will debut, but with production planned to start in Summer 2024, it’s on track for a streaming release in 2025. for now, fans can watch The Office on Peacock.
