The CBS series Tracker was an instant hit for the network, drawing high acclaim and strong reviews with its first season’s premiere earlier this year. While the show was quick to become popular, fans shouldn’t expect to see any companion shows going into development just yet.
Per TVLine, showrunner and executive producer Elwood Reid suggested that a spinoff won’t be happening anytime soon. While Reid has been hearing suggestions about spinning off the show to create a larger franchise, but he’s not convinced that going down that road so early would be such a good idea. Reid noted how Tracker doesn’t have the same restrictions as police procedurals, so there’s still plenty left to explore in the show before feeling the need to branch out with a spinoff.
“The show is so singular with Justin [Hartley at its center] that it’s really important we keep expanding the world, expanding the cases and [expanding] what Tracker can do,” Reid said. “Unlike a lot of shows — unlike a cop show in New York or Chicago, where they’re always dealing with a homicide — I can go into any world. I can go into stock car racing, I can go into Nashville, I can go into any world I want.”
Reid clarified that he wasn’t completely opposed to a spinoff happening at some point. It would just need to be an idea that “made sense and seemed obvious to us.” He added that if they were “so lucky enough” to find a character intriguing enough to “spin it out for franchising, then Ken and I will be first in line.”
Which Tracker Character Could Be Given a Spinoff?
It’s not that Tracker doesn’t have some possible avenues to go down already with a potential spinoff series. Supernatural and The Boys star Jensen Ackles debuted in the first season as Russell, Colter’s brother, and the actor will reprise the role for multiple episodes of Season 2. Sofia Pernas, Hartley’s real-life wife, was also featured in the first season as fellow tracker Billie Matalon, marking another example of a character who could potentially lead a spinoff series.
Ben H. Winters developed the series, which is based on Jeffery Deaver’s The Never Game. Justin Hartley leads the cast as Colter Shaw. Other cast members include Robin Weigert, Abby McEnany, Eric Graise, Fiona Rene, and Lee Tergesen.
