Howie Mandel is a spokesman for Skechers. However, his story of how he got this gig as an ambassador is funny. The America’s Got Talent judge recently told the story of how he ended up with the shoe company, and it all started with a lie. Mandel just wanted a discount and was rewarded for his dishonesty.
Here is what you need to know about Mandel and Skechers.
Howie Mandel Lied To Get Skechers Deal
Howie Mandel is an ambassador for Skechers. However, this wasn’t a deal that Mandel came to by reaching out to the company. It also wasn’t something Skechers did, either, until Howie did something a little unethical when he lied to a Skechers employee.
Howie Mandel did an interview promoting Skechers Hands-Free Slip-ins, and he started to explain why he was promoting the shoe brand to begin with. “I went to a Skechers store and I went to buy what I love and what I wear and what I find easy to do,” Howie, 68, said (via Us Weekly).
While he was there with his wife, Terry Mandel, he was paying for his shoes when the person checking him out recognized him. The employee said she was a big fan of him on America’s Got Talent and was sure that Howie had to be an ambassador for Skechers.
Howie wasn’t, but he said he was because he learned he would get a discount on the shoes. When the girl looked in the computer, she couldn’t find his name. She said not to worry about it and gave him the discount anyway. The employee asked if he could hold up his purchase so she could send it to the head office.
Skechers Contacts Howie Mandel
Howie Mandel took the photo and went on his way. He said that his wife called him an “idiot” because he had bought a ton of Skechers and paid full price, and she wanted to know why he lied to save a few dollars. She said everyone would know because of the photo.
One week later, Howie’s agent called and said Skechers wanted to talk to him. The America’s Got Talent judge said he was willing to send Skechers $20 to cover the discount, but that wasn’t why they called. The company wanted to bring Howie on as an actual ambassador.
“They go, ‘Well, the good part is that you’re actually a customer. You actually think these are incredibly comfortable. You actually used our product. And I think it’s funny that you kind of lied and you were embarrassed. And you know what your wife is right, and you should be embarrassed nationally,’” Howie said. They joked that Howie’s deal is that he is a liar. This is his community service.
