As expected, things took a turn for the worse when news broke that SAG-AFTRA had initiated their own strike, with president Fran Drescher criticizing one of the biggest CEOs in the game, Disney’s Bob Iger, who made disparaging comments about the strike.
As SAG-AFTRA strikes, Bob Iger pats himself on the back while criticizing the actors union, saying in part, “As an industry, we have managed to negotiate a very good deal with directors association to reflect the value that directors contribute to this wonderful business. We want to do the same thing with the writers and we want to do the same thing with the actors. They have a certain level of expectation, but it’s not realistic. And they are adding to the set of challenges that this business is facing, which is, frankly, very difficult.” This doesn’t sit well with Fran Drescher.
“I found [his comments] extremely hateful and out of touch,” Fran Drescher said. “Positive tone deafness. I don’t think it’s doing him any good…If I were that company, I would lock him behind a door and never let him talk to anyone about this, because he obviously know nothing about what is really going on in the company. works with hard working people but the salary is nowhere near what he is earning. Seven figures, eight figures, this is crazy money they’re making and they don’t care if they’re medieval land barons.” Fran Drescher wasn’t the only one to spot Iger’s thoughtless comments, as others criticized the CEO, whose net worth was reported to be $690 million in 2019.
Iger returned to Disney after Bob Chapek was removed and now earns at least $25 million a year. To receive a health care package from SAG-AFTRA, an actor must earn at least $26,470 per year, which Iger easily paid in half a day.
