UPCOMING: The Nanny is getting a musical!

A musical based on our beloved ’90s hero and fashion icon, The Nanny, is heading to Broadway. If that news wasn’t enough to have you rushing to the Sheffield’s door, it turns out Fran Drescher—the woman who forever earned a place in our hearts for her portrayal of the flashy girl from Flushing—is developing the project.

Drescher, 62, is the creator of the sitcom, which began in 1993, and was of course, the star, playing the role of Fran Fine for all six seasons. She’s on board with the Broadway project and will write the script with Peter Marc Jacobson, the show’s co-creator. Scott and Brian Zeilinger, who worked on Mean Girls The Musical, have signed onto the project as directors.

No details of the cast have been announced, but (rightfully so) Drescher has already answered our number one burning question: (sadly) no, she won’t be reprising her role. While that’s a disappointment in itself, it does mean that any one of us can now live our dream of living life as Fran Fine, since it obviously leaves the casting wide open.

Our second burning question is who will play Mr Sheffield? Who could replace the ever-handsome Charles Shaughnessy, who played the British patriarch of the family, and who originally hired Fran Fine as the nanny to his children?

Being a musical, it’s important to note that the team behind the Emmy-award winning show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will be creating the score for The Nanny The Musical. If you’re not familiar, it’s a popular musical comedy-drama series that’s been running since 2015 and has clocked up a cult following. Rachel Bloom, the show’s creator, and Adam Schlesinger, the show’s executive music director, are both on board.

Then there’s the matter of plot. Details are scarce on this too but we’re hoping it’ll accurately recreate the TV show’s theme song, which leads well into the very first episode of the show, yet with enough leverage to get to the chemistry between Mr Sheffield and Ms Fine. In any case, we really hope they choose to celebrate the existing show, rather than move toward a sequel or new storyline.

Until more details drop, reminisce on what was arguably the greatest show of all time by watching the below (on repeat).
