After leading SAG-AFTRA through the latest round of negotiations with AMPTP, association President Fran Drescher (The Nanny) has been cast in the sequel to the 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap, taking on takes on the role of journalist Bobbi Flekman.
Other new additions to the cast include Don Lake (The Bonnie Hunt Show), John Michael Higgins (Best Picture), Jason Acuña (Jackass), Nina Conti (Family Tree), Griffin Matthews (The Next Flight actors), Kerry Godliman (After Life), Chris Addison (Veep), comedian Brad Williams and musician Paul Shaffer. Details about the roles of these actors are still being kept secret.
Also currently involved in the project are Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Metallica co-founder and drummer Lars Ulrich, who will make cameos. Production is currently underway in New Orleans, with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer taking on legendary heavy metal band, Spinal Tap, under the direction of Rob Reiner.
Conceived by Guest, McKean, Reiner and Shearer, the sequel follows Britain’s loudest and most punctual band as they reunite for their final concert after a 15-year hiatus. Reiner returns as documentary filmmaker Martin “Marty” DiBergi, with Elton John, Paul McCartney, Questlove, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood also making cameos, as previously announced.
The film is produced by Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner and Matthew George and is financed by Castle Rock Entertainment. Christopher H. Warner and Derrick Rossi serve as executive producers. CAA Media Finance represents the film’s domestic rights.
