Fans still have plenty of unanswered questions following Virgin River’s Season 5 Part 2, but unfortunately, the show may not be returning as soon as we’d like. Keep reading to find out when Virgin River Season 6 is coming out.
Virgin River is a romantic drama based on the novels of the same name by Robyn Carr. It debuted on Netflix in 2019 and centers on Melinda ‘Mel’ Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a woman who relocates from Los Angeles to the remote Northern California town Virgin River for a fresh start. She is hired by Vernon “Doc” Mullins (played by Tim Matheson) to be the town’s nurse practitioner/midwife and quickly forms close bonds with several of the townspeople, including Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), whom she later gets engaged to.
The second part of Season 5 was released on Nov. 30, 2023. In the Christmas-themed episodes, Mel discovered her biological father and reunited with him just in time for the holidays. The last episode ends on a cliffhanger, though, with Mel’s dad Everett telling her: “I’ve got something important I need to tell you.”
The mysterious final line leaves fans eager for a sixth season, but they may have a long wait ahead of them. See when Virgin River is returning below.
When does Virgin River return for Season 6? Netflix announced their 2024 release dates in early February, but Virgin River was nowhere to be found on the list. Instead, the sixth season will be pushed to 2025, along with the new seasons of hit series like Wednesday, Stranger Things, Sweet Magnolias and Ginny & Georgia, among others. While Virgin River doesn’t require extensive post-production as Stranger Things does, the drama reported has to wait until spring 2024 to begin filming in Vancouver due to weather, per Deadline.
Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith had previously told Glamor that he was doing his “darnedest” to get a new season to fans in 2024. “We don’t have an exact date yet, but I know that everyone is working towards trying to get us us back in front of the cameras as quickly as possible,” he said. Those plans were likely derailed by the writers’ and actors’ strikes, forcing the show to push the Season 6 release date to 2025.
While fans will have to wait nearly a year for the new season, Smith has teased what they can expect. While speaking to Decider, he called Everett’s mysterious final line “a bit of a bombshell” and said that it “informs a lot of what’s happening in Season 6.” He also shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that fans expect a bit of a “lighter” season than Season 5, but noted: “That doesn’t mean it’s not going to be complicated with the signature Virgin River twists and turns.” He added: “I think leaning more into the romance of the series is something that we’re excited to do as well, and just keep giving the fans what they want.”
