9-1-1 Season 6 officially wrapped on Monday night after another high-stakes episode saw the entire 118 fighting for their lives after a bridge collapsed.
The season ended with tons of Season 7 potential, but after FOX shockingly canceled the first responder procedural drama from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, will the series return with new episodes, or will the Season 6 finale double as the series finale?
Wondering why FOX canceled the long-running series? If 9-1-1 Season 7 is happening? And what another season of the beloved drama might look like? Fear not, 118 stans. We’ve got all the answers below.
Why Did FOX Cancel 9-1-1? Was 9-1-1 Renewed For Season 7 On ABC?
As Decider reported on May 1, FOX canceled 9-1-1 after a six-season run. But before fans could get too outraged, ABC saved the series by picking it up for Season 7. The 118 will return as part of ABC’s 2023-2024 lineup, and Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, is excited about the new addition to the network.
“Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC,” Erwich said in a statement. “It’s a privilege to keep 9-1-1 in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air.”
As for why FOX let the popular drama go, the network shared the following statement with Variety post-cancellation: “It has been an honor to be the founding network of 9-1-1 and we are grateful to Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, together with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Ryan Guzman and the rest of the cast and crew, and 20th Television for delivering such an impactful series to Fox. We wish them well after 9-1-1’s final Fox season concludes.”
For those curious, the 9-1-1 spin-off 9-1-1: Lone Star (starring Rob Lowe and Gina Torres) will remain on FIX and was renewed for Season 5.
What Will 9-1-1 Season 7 Look Like? Potential 9-1-1 Season 7 Plotlines:
If you have yet to watch 9-1-1‘s Season 6 finale, you may want to stop reading to avoid spoilers. But if you’ve seen the final Season 6 installment or just want to know what to expect from 9-1-1 Season 2, we have a few ideas.
After surviving the bridge collapse, the 118 ended Season 6 on the roof together with Bobby leading a medication to help everyone clear their minds and let go of past traumas. Chimney’s mind drifted to planning a home wedding with Maddie. Eddie thought about calling Marisol (with Christopher’s support) and her asking him out on a date. Hen recalled her and Karen getting the opportunity to foster (and potentially adopt!) another baby girl. And Buck is dreaming of couch shopping with his new gal Natalia.
Aside from those obvious storylines, Buck did just deliver Kameron’s baby, so that relationship — or Buck’s own desire to have a family — may continue to be explored in Season 7. Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) is back with the 118, so we’ll likely see more of him in future episodes. And, oh yeah, Bobby and Athena ended the season by taking a long-overdue vacation. But will it end in disaster?!
“I can’t believe we’re doing this!” Athena said to Bobby as the two walked towards a cruise ship. “Well, a last-minute cancellation…how can we pass up this opportunity?” he replied. Before the end credits rolled, Athena took the time to note that they didn’t inform ANYONE they were going on their trip?! So now we have to fear for their lives for literal months! Rude!
Decider will update this post as additional details on 9-1-1 Season 7 are released. Until then, 9-1-1 is currently available to stream on Hulu.
