Young Sheldon will officially wrap up with its upcoming Season 7 finale, putting an end to the Big Bang Theory prequel series. Some of the stars of the show don’t seem to have completely agreed with the decision, feeling that there was potential to keep the show going for longer.
Per Variety, the show ending was discussed by series stars Iain Armitage (Sheldon Cooper) and Annie Potts (Meemaw). Following up previous comments made about how she was surprised that the show would be ending, Potts doubled down by stressing how she felt “ambushed” by the decision. Armitage noted how much he’s going to miss Potts, adding his belief that the show could have very well kept going for longer.
“This one was especially hard because I was completely unprepared,” Potts said. “I was shocked. I mean, the No. 1 show on network TV, No. 1 on Netflix. We’re, I think, all that people watch on TikTok besides a couple of recipes for pasta. It just seemed like such a stupid business move. Forgive me, but I don’t know. If a show is starting to drag or lag or have a lack of stories or whatever, then you kind of see it coming. We were totally ambushed by this. I was, anyway.”
Armitage added, “I totally get what Annie means. It’s also just hard in a really weird way that I can only really see if I step back and try and take a global view, which is hard. I mean, I’m not going to get to see Annie Potts every day. This is a real loss for me. More than anyone. I definitely think we could have done a lot more.”
Potts also stated that it’s “been really, really emotional” wrapping up the series. Armitage also found it challenging to say goodbye after developing a strong bond with the show’s cast and crew over the course of seven years, but he also is looking ahead to the future following his run playing Sheldon Cooper.
“It’s definitely hard to end and getting to work with such incredible people will always make it harder,” he said. “I feel so lucky for seven wonderful years, but at the same time, I’m very excited because I get to come back out [to Los Angeles] in June. I’ll get to hang out with Annie, I’m getting my pilot’s license and I’m going to get to give tours at Warner Bros., which will be wonderful.”
