Why does Mel not like Dr Hayek?

At some point before his move to Virgin River, he was engaged. After breaking up the engagement, he moved to the town to work for Vernon Mullins where he met Mel Monroe. While she was with Jack Sheridan, he tried to talk her into breaking up with the man. This upsets Mel, who leaves the practice, so Cameron would stay.

With Mel gone, he is asked to take over the paperwork and Mel’s other duties, which he cannot do. This results in Muriel St. Claire volunteering as an office manager to fill out the paperwork. During the nearby wildfires, he and Mel team up to talk Kaia Bryant through helping a woman give birth. While helping an injured firefighter, he learns that Vernon is losing his sight, something that upsets him. However upon being asked to become a partner in the practice, he agrees.

After Muriel’s house is burned down, he is who she vents to about her issues with Connie. This results in him suggesting she move into his spare bedroom. While she stayed with him, they realized that they were attracted to each other. He later learns that Muriel spoke with Vernon who didn’t care if they dated, allowing them to begin a relationship.
Fischer’s research focuses on nontraditional sources of air pollutants, like wildfires. “We work on both what’s in the smoke and also how smoke moves,” she tells Tudum. “We support epidemiologists and economists who ask questions like, ‘When smoke is present, What happens at a population level? What are the health impacts?’ ”

During the Virgin River episodes, Mel, who’s experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, discovers she’s miscarrying her baby. Although the smoke likely did not cause her miscarriage, Fischer says we do know that, for pregnant people who are exposed to higher concentrations of smoke in the second trimester, “there does appear to be some impacts on the pregnancy. These are real things with real people that are sad. Those numbers are somebody’s life — 5% increase in a [tragic] outcome is a big deal for that one person.”
